Character Descriptions

Janine "Smurf" Cody (Ellen Barkin): A seemingly legit businesswoman in a Southern California beach town, Smurf is really the provocative matriarch of a close-knit crime family composed of her four grown sons. One moment coddling, the next menacing, the unpredictable and manipulative Smurf has a warped emotional hold over "her boys" that makes them fear and resent her while still vying for her love and approval.

Andrew "Pope" Cody (Shawn Hatosy): Pope is the eldest and most volatile of the Cody boys, and while he can be ruthlessly violent, he tries his best to fight against his dangerous impulses while Smurf encourages them. Despite his unpredictable behavior, Pope is steady in his conviction to do whatever it takes to keep the family intact.

Craig Cody (Ben Robson): Smurf's imposing middle son, who is ruled by his own desires, Craig is a fearless adrenaline junkie and recreational drug user not known for his ability to think through the consequences of his actions. Despite these flaws, and somewhat because of them, Smurf often regards Craig as the easiest of her boys to control.

Deran Cody (Jake Weary): Smurf's youngest son and the sharp-witted "baby" of the family, Deran has a chip on his shoulder from always having to prove himself among his brothers. Despite his attempts to create a life for himself outside of the family, he always gets reeled back in.

Joshua "J" Cody (Finn Cole): Smurf's teenage grandson, J is taken in by the family when J’s mom (Smurf's estranged daughter and Pope’s twin sister) dies of a heroin overdose. As J learns how to survive in the world of the Codys, he harbors his own plans to avenge his mother’s death and assert himself as a leader in the family.

Mia Trujillo (Sohvi Rodriguez): A tough, unpredictable young woman raised in a gang, Mia forms an alliance with J as he questions her motives at every turn.
